In a general sense,cultured pearls evolve in a similar manner as natural pearls with the distinction being that cultured pearls have an irritant particle intentionally planted by a pearl farmer to instigate the formation of a pearl
Freshwater Cultured Pearls - These cultured pearls are farmed in freshwater and grown in mussels. The irritants used in making freshwater pearls are often smaller than those used in saltwater pearls, which results in a pearl with more nacre, or pearl, and less core irritant.
Saltwater Cultured Pearls - These cultured pearls are farmed in saltwater and almost always grown in oysters.The irritants used in making saltwater pearls usually are small beads. Our salwater cultured pearls are from the South China Sea.
Mabe Pearl -These are actually "mother of pearl"creations as opposed to pearls.Mabe pearls are created when a human attaches a plastic dome to the inside shell of an oyster,which reacts by covering the dome with nacre,When harvested the mabe is cut off the oyster shell and the inside of the dome is filled with with something,possibly epoxy,to give it weight.A backing of either plastic or mother of pearl is placed on the back of the mabe pearl which is then used in making a piece of jewelry often mabe pearl rings,earrings and pendants.
Types of Pearl Necklaces
Collar Necklaces are roughly 12 inches in length, or any length that fits firmly around the middle of the neck with no slack. These are often multiple strand pearl necklaces.

Surface - This refers to the presence, or hopefully, absence of marks and blemishes.High quality pearls have few if any blemishes or marks.The nacre layers are uniform and without inconsistencies or imperfections in quality pearls.
Color - White has traditionally been the most sought after color with other colors such as pink,black,champagne,silver,blue,rose,brown,yellow and green.
Size - All other characteristics being equal the larger the pearl the more valuable the pearl should be.However,beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many people will prefer smaller sizes for different pieces of pearl jewelry.
How to Care for Pearls
Protecting pearls - a pearl is a natural object and is not designend to be in contact with most manufactured chemicals such as perfume,make-up,skin care products,hair spray or similar compounds.Contact with these items can alter a pearl's luster or color.
Cleaning Pearls - If your pearls do require cleaning it's best to use a very soft,non-abrasive soap such as soft liquid hand soap.Once you have gently wiped them with water and soft soap you should let them dry naturally by letting them sit on a cloth or a paper towel.
Storing Pearls - You should avoid storing pearls in such a way that they might rub against each other.This means don't store them in a box with other metal jewelry or stones.The ideal way to store pearls is to lay the lengthwise in a soft cloth such as felt on silk.
Wearing Pearls - By wearing your pearls frequently you can sometimes prevent the strand from becoming dry and rigid.So enjoy them, wear them frequently and they may remain more lose and fluid.
