Information about pearls quality check
Natural Pearls - These form without instigation from humans. The process begins when an irritant, possibly a piece of coral or seashell, positions itself inside of an oyster. As a defensive measure the oyster continuously secrets layers of nacre which cover the irritant. This nacre forms the "pearl" as we know it. Natural pearls are rare nowdays.Pearls sold in department stores or jewelry stores are almost cutured pearls.
In a general sense, cultured pearls evolve in a similar manner as natural pearls with the distinction being that cultured pearls have an irritant particle intentionally planted by a pearl farmer to instigate the formation of a pearl
Freshwater Cultured Pearls - These cultured pearls are farmed in freshwater and grown in mussels. The irritants used in making freshwater pearls are often smaller than those used in saltwater pearls, which results in a pearl with more nacre, or pearl, and less core irritant.
Saltwater Cultured Pearls - These cultured pearls are farmed in saltwater and almost always grown in oysters. The irritants used in making saltwater pearls usually are small beads. Our salwater cultured pearls are from the South China Sea.
Mabe Pearl -These are actually "mother of pearl"creations as opposed to pearls.Mabe pearls are created when a human attaches a plastic dome to the inside shell of an oyster, which reacts by covering the dome with nacre,When harvested the mabe is cut off the oyster shell and the inside of the dome is filled with with something, possibly epoxy,to give it weight.A backing of either plastic or mother of pearl is placed on the back of the mabe pearl which is then used in making a piece of jewelry often mabe pearl rings, earrings and pendants.
Types of Pearl Necklaces
Collar Necklaces are roughly 12 inches in length, or any length that fits firmly around the middle of the neck with no slack. These are often multiple strand pearl necklaces.
Choker Necklaces are 14-16 inches in length. Princess Necklaces are 18-20 inches in length. Matinee Necklaces are 22-24 inches in length. Opera Necklaces are 28-36 inches in length. Rope Necklaces are 40 inches in length. Floating Necklaces are sometimes called illusion necklaces since they create the illusion that there is no string present to hold the pearls together. These are very popular at the present time. Tin Cup Necklaces are also very popular and similar to the floating necklace with the distinction being that the string or wire holding the pearls together will be more visible. There is no intent to hide the string,it's intended to be seen. The name comes from the fact that the necklace reminds some people of the design kids use to make a toy phone when they string tins cans together.
